I am mounting MAFAC 2000 brakes on the Waterford. The brake calipers will be mounted to brazed on bosses. For those that might be curious about the difference between the MAFAC bosses and standard canti bosses:
In the above photo the canti boss is on the left and the Mafac boss and spring are on the right.
The MAFAC pivot bolt does fit into the Canti threaded boss and the MAFAC calipers fit on the boss as well. If you really wanted to you could adapt a canti boss by cutting down the threaded front and cutting the back and filing it so it fit on the fork blade or seat stay with the spring holes on top instead of to the side. However, any machine shop should be able to fabricate a Mafac style boss. Note that the rear of the MAFAC boss shown has not yet been filed to fit on to the fork blade or seat stay.
According to this Mafac Poster bosses should be mounted 62mm c-to-c for both short and long reach versions of all the Mafac brakes. The “Étrier Réglable” versions of all brakes (which translates as adjustable clamp) are listed as requiring 63mm c-to-c.
Correction: Jack has pointed out in the comments that the Raid unlike most of the other MAFAC’s is 75mm in the“E” dimension. Here is the chart from the poster I linked to. A bit hard to read but it’s got the complete specs for all the brakes.
The above diagram is of a MAFAC Competition brake via Sheldon Brown. I altered the diagram removing the back plate and sketched in Mafac bosses instead. Most of the MAFAC models that I have seen mount the same way onto the bosses.
Sources for MAFAC bosses:
The MAFAC bosses shown in the above pictures were fabricated by Amir Avitzur. You can reach Amir at walawalaoxenfree ( at ) gmail.com. Amir’s current studs are made from 4340 Chromoly Steel and he has a new plate available that will give more spring back. See pics in Amir’s Flickr photostream. Here is a sample of Avnir’s posts:
The “E” dimension on RAIDs is 75mm.

Jack
Thanks for pointing that out, Jack.
I corrected the post and added an image of the chart from the Mafac poster.
Nice web page!
Luv the little round studs 😉
Now I know why I keep getting emails from people who think I make and sell centerpull brake pivots.
I have never made them for sale and the bikes pictured are 30 years old. Please either remove the photos or at least make it clear that I do not sell them.
Pics and link to Bikesmith removed.
